Free the Heron!

We took advantage of a break in the recent heavy rains to liberate our juvenile yellow-crowned night heron. We were not sorry to see him go. In perfect conditions we would have released him 5 or 6 days sooner - it's always a concern that a highly-strung bird will injure himself in the enclosure if they are caged beyond their 'due date', not to mention the huge difficulties in finding fish for him lately. Thank you as always to our good friends at Caves Branch who yet again provided a perfect site for his release amongst many species of heron, including yellow-crowned (also thanks to Roni Martinez for the location advice) Good luck little fella!

Yellow-crowned night heron

Our little heron came in thin, downed and very sick with parasites. Thanks to Lynn Ann Snelman of Surfside Community in Seine Bight (Placencia) for the rescue, brave capture and transport!

And he's off! Great release at the Caves Branch River (at Ian Anderson's Caves Branch Resort)
