Baby keel-billed toucan!

We received this adorable baby this week.

The family that rescued her took a few weeks to find out who to contact, and unfortunately they also clipped her wings, which means she will be with us for at least a year until her first moult brings in new flight feathers.

There is a technique whereby all of the clipped feathers are pulled out at the shaft, forcing a stress-moult, but this can result in damaged or destroyed follicles rendering the bird permanently disabled. So we err on the side of caution and wait for them to shed naturally.

In 2015 we have received 52 such long-term care birds, putting a massive strain on our resources.

To support our nursery facility appeal, we are combining an invitation to name this gorgeous baby toucan with an opportunity to make a donation (and invite all those that have already donated to suggest a name)

Visit our Facebook page to join in with the name suggestions!

Thank you for caring.
